AUGUST: SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE OF SLOWING

August: Spiritual discipline of Slowing

We live in a fast-paced society that is only speeding up, and studies are showing the hurry we all live in is not good for our souls.

This month in The Good Life, we are leaning into the spiritual discipline of Slowing. Join us as we look to Jesus as our example for what it means to live an unhurried life and learn together what it meant when Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you.”

Below you’ll find this month’s teaching video, as well as other resources to help you slow down the speed of your life and move at Jesus’ pace.

5 Simple Steps to Practice Slowing

    1. Make yourself wait.
Drive the speed limit. Come to a full stop at stop signs. Choose the longest line at the grocery store! And while you wait, DON’T PULL OUT YOUR PHONE!

    2. Limit/Reduce/Remove media.
Limit or remove social media. Put your phone to bed (not next to your bed though!) and don’t pick it up until you’ve spent time with Jesus the next morning. Abstain from TV and do something that forces you to slow down. (Try a puzzle or crocheting something!)

    3. Single-task.
Turn off all notifications on your phone and remove email from it. Schedule time to check email, and focus on one thing at a time.

    4. Walk slowly.

It’ll drive you (and everyone else!) nuts, but as your body screams with impatience, remember that’s a sign that this is working.

    5. Pray, “Lord, as I slow down, teach me your ways.”

Print this prayer out and hang it places you are prone to hurry: the car, your bathroom mirror, on the front of your Bible.
