NOVEMBER: SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE OF GRATITUDE

November: Spiritual discipline of Gratitude

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
– Psalms 100:4-5

This month in The Good Life, we are leaning into the spiritual discipline of Gratitude. Gratitude simply means that we are practicing and producing an attitude of being thankful but it goes deeper than that. It’s not mindless or behavior modification. It means that in our hearts, we’ve decided that despite our circumstances, we can find gratitude because of Christ Jesus in us. It’s easier said than done so we’re going to explore that together in community.

Below you’ll find this month’s teaching video, as well as a 21 Day Guide on Gratitude to help you practice the discipline of gratitude.

3 Steps on practicing Gratitude

    1. Be content with where you are right now.

      Paul tells us that he found the secret to living in every situation and that is to be content with whatever he has. The secret to handling our circumstances is to pause and find contentment in where God has us at the moment. Take time everyday this month during your prayer time with the Lord and meditate on these truths:

      • God, whether I have plenty or little, you are in control and I can be thankful for that.

      • God, my problems may seem big right now, but You are bigger and I can be thankful for that.

    2. Remind yourself of God’s goodness and write them in a journal.

      Take time to write one thing in your journal that you can be grateful for and connect it to God’s goodness. When we write things down, we remember things better and as a result, it becomes more applicable to our own lives. Psalms will tell us that we should enter God’s gates with thanksgiving because He is good. The reason we are able to be thankful stems from God’s goodness.

    3. Eliminate any complaining thoughts from your life.

      Complaining is the enemy of gratitude. Romans 1:21 will tell us that humanity knew God but they didn’t worship nor give Him thanks! As a result, their minds became dark and confused. When we are not giving thanks, our focus gets away from God. Remember, God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt and the first thing they did was grumble and complain in the desert. Where did that lead them? It led them down a place of idolatry. So ruthlessly eliminate any complaining from your life this month.
