APRIL: SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE OF SABBATH

As we continue in The Good Life, this month’s Spiritual Discipline is Sabbath. The word “Sabbath” comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat which means “to stop.” In a world where everything is constantly on the go, and it seems like our schedules are never-ending, we have forgotten how to find rest for our souls. The spiritual discipline of the Sabbath is not a new idea. It’s just new to us. As we begin to Sabbath this month, we will pray for Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28-30 to take on his yoke and find rest for our souls. We will ask Jesus to rid us of all distractions in our lives and live the Good Life He’s called us to.

Like all spiritual disciplines, Sabbath can be a challenging one for many. It’s easy to give in to our desires, but Sabbath reveals the unrest that lies in our hearts. Lean in this month! Watch the teaching video on how to practice Sabbath! You will be surprised at how much of a difference Sabbath can make in our day-to-day lives.

4 Steps on How to Sabbath

  1. Plan your Sabbath. Observe your Sabbath as if it was a holiday or “Holy-Day.” Cook your best meals. Do your favorite activities. Spend time with your loved ones. Get creative!

  2. Find your “7th” day. Pick a day of the week that will be your Sabbath and stick to it all month. It’ll change the way you view your week to come.

  3. Stop all the things that hurry and distract you. We advise you to give yourself a break from the noise. Consider turning your phone off and taking a break from social media during your Sabbath. Identify the distractions in your life that keep you from making God the center of your day and rid them.

  4. Delight in and worship the Lord of the Sabbath. Spend some time with God with the reading plan provided below. Practice finding moments of quiet time to delight in the Lord.
